An assigned read for my American Writers II class. From the back cover: "Mary Wilkins Freeman (1852-1930) possessed a unique genius for transporting her readers into the intimate world of women fighting for dignity and independence from men." Really, enough said. These are stories about women who were spunky before their time. The sort of women who paved the way for you and me.
My favorite quote: "Unsolicited opportunities are the guide-posts of the Lord to the new roads of life."
Said by meek, humble, otherwise obedient farmer's wife just after old farmer husband builds brand new barn on the very piece of land that he had promised to build his wife a new house on for the last 40 years. Old farmer is called out of town and meek, humble, otherwise obedient farmer's wife seizes the opportunity to move the entire house into the barn and make it her new home.
Girl. Power.
