what i am reading now:
I finished absolutely nothing this week! This is an unusual state of affairs that I suspect has come about because I am trying to read too many books at once:
Pride and Prejudice is a lovely story. In fact, one of my favorites. However, taking notes on this book has slowed me down considerably. I am wise enough to know that note-taking is of utmost importance for a literature class yet I am very irritated to have to slow my reading down to take those notes. I'm on Page 120 of 260. I should have it read by the end of this week. (I'm reading it 22 pages at a time).
Shame the Devil by Debra Brenegan is the amazing life story of Fanny Fern (Sara Payson Willis).
Fanny was a writer that lived in the mid-1800s. She stood amongst famous people such as Harriet Beecher Stowe to fight for all women's rights to live freely and earn an income in the way that they choose. The story has been quite interesting and I look forward to reviewing it for Pump Up Your Books on September 13.
The Borrower by Rebecca Makkai came to my Nook via the public library last night. I have been waiting to read this book for a month. I have allowed myself a little read of it between the pages of P&P and Shame the Devil. It is going to be an amazingly good story. I can just tell. I believe we have an unreliable narrator telling the story. However, I won't be able to confirm that until I read more!
what's next?
That's right, folks, it's time to catch up with the adventures of Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes!
Have a great reading week!

Jane Eyre is a favourite of mine and I always enjoy Sherlock Holmes. Have a lovely week and enjoy your books.

Thanks, Jennifer! I'm hopping over to see you now.
ReplyDeleteAre you focusing on anything in particular during your close-reading of Pride and Prejudice? I recently finished this novel and it contains such a richly layered subtext that has left me overwhelmed. I'm curious as what you have to say about this one. Great blog :)
ReplyDeleteJason: I have read P&P no less than 3 times and maybe a few more. The first for fun. Don't remember much but that it was enjoyable. The second 2 years ago for a different literature class where we looked at Austen's attempt at satire in the marriage state. Now, for a class called Courtship and Seduction. Today's reading will focus on how courtship and seduction are used by Austen in the novel. Frankly, this novel is beginning to tire me and every time I pick it up, I fall asleep! I'll let you know if I come up with anything genius to say about it this time around.
ReplyDeleteEdited to add: for my last paper on Austen, I struggled with writing it for nearly a week. I went to bed exhausted one night and woke up in the middle of the night only to rewrite the entire thing. Whatever genius I had dreamed up was chosen as the example the professor shared with the class as a well-written example. I have to trust I will develop some or another good thought some night this week whilst I dream.
ReplyDeleteI loved Pride and Prejudice, one of my favorites books thus far.
ReplyDeleteHappy Reading!
