TOP TEN SERIES THAT I DIDN'T FINISH

Brought to us by The Broke and The Bookish

Since this week has been proclaimed a freebie week by those swell people at The Broke and The Bookish and this has been on my mind lately, my top ten will be of the series that I have never finished.

1.  Outlander by Diana Galbadon.  I read the first two 1000 page books but just couldn't commit to a series with 1000 page books.  I don't think my attention span can endure.

2.   First To Die by James Patterson.  I'm pretty sure that series is on 10 but I simply cannot read about people dying horrible deaths with such frequency.  It does funny stuff to my head.

3.   The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.  I actually read the first four of those books in quick succession and then just stopped for no explainable reason.

4.   The Eyre Affair (A Thursday Next Novel) by Jasper Fforde.  Another book that I loved and thought had strong potential but for some reason I didn't pick up the second.  I think I had it in my head that I wouldn't enjoy it unless I read the associated classic first.

5.   Sookie Stackhouse by Charlaine Harris.  Here's a series I was so sure I would like that I bought the whole 8 book (at the time) series.  I read the first and decided that I was done with vampires.

6.  Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear.   I read the first two and truly have intended to go back to the next one and just have not.  Now it's been so long that I'm not sure if I will.

7.   Amelia Peabody by Elizabeth Peters.  I absolutely adore this series.  I've read the first two.  I have every intention of returning but my TBR has become beyond insane.

8.  Deborah Knott series by Margaret Maron.  Another where I loved the character and read the first two books but just never got back to it.

9.  Yada Yada Prayer Group by Neta Jackson.  I have so many friends that have loved this series but somehow I couldn't find the love for myself.

10.   Carpe Demon by Julie Kenner.  I was loving this demon-hunting soccer mom book and read three of them and then BLAM I just didn't read the next even though it was sitting on my shelf.

I do not know what goes into my decision making process to either finish or not finish a series.  As you can see, many of my unfinished projects are excellent books and series.  Maybe, it's just too many series and not enough time.  Enjoy your reading week!

  2. Great idea for a Top Ten list!

I am a sampler when it comes to books in a series. I read one and I'm done.

I'd have lots to choose from if we all did a Top Ten list like this. ;->

  3. It's funny that you mention the Outlander series b/c I have plans to start that soon. There aren't many series that I have picked up and never finished but there are a few.
-A Song of Ice & Fire series, G.R.R. Martin
-The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien
    -The Immortals, Alyson Noel

Great topic! :) Thanks for stopping by and commenting at http://manytoread.blogspot.com/

  6. Great topic, Belle.

But I'm thinking a series is never really finished if the author is still alive and writing it.

I'm not a Sookie Stackhouse or a James Patterson fan either. No thanks.

I have read all of Jasper Fforde's books and love them. The Thursday Next series just gets better and better.

I had the same reaction to MAISIE DOBBS as you did. Read the first one, but when I tried to read the next one I lost interest.

Sometimes there is no real rhyme or reason to our choices.

  7. Good choice of subject. I have started reading a number of series and never finished them, either because I lost interest, lost momentum, or became disgusted with them. My interest in The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency sort of fizzled out and the In Death books by J.D. Robb I am determined to get back to at some point, but it would take a great deal of money to make me continue reading the Anita Blake books.

  8. Oh, what a great topic choice! It'd probably be easier for me to list series I have finished. There are so few it's easier to remember them!

  9. We did pick the same topic huh? I actually only heard of the sookie books, and there are so many of those I'm afraid to even start.

  10. I read "The Outlander" (loved it) by Diana Galbadon before realizing it was book 1 of a series. I never read the others, because I perfectly happy with the "The Outlander" ending.

  11. And this is why I love stand alone's, why so many trilogies and sereies, sigh

You had me laugh at JAmesP and I have had Sookie for so long and just can't bring myself to read it, I already decided I will only read the first if I ever do.

  13. I haven't even heard of most of these. but I too bought all the Sookie Stackhouses. I intend on reading them all but I'm pacing myself. I've also wanted to try the #1 Ladies Detective Agency. I loved the show when it was on. I hate that they only made one season.

  14. Great topic this week. Just today I started book 3 of The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency! Love the characters! Also, The Eyre Affair series is a treat to literature!

  15. I had the same problem with the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind that you did with the Outlander series. I read the entire first book (600-something pages) and I got about 150 pages into the second book and couldn't remember what happened in the first book. Also, the series was 11 books long when I started. That's way too many pages with way too many things to remember.

  16. When I was in middle school I adored the Thoroughbred series by Joanna Campbell--probably totally natural considering the depth of my horse obsession at the time. I read them religiously for a long time, but when I received one as gift that was twelve or so books ahead of the one I had just read, I got kind of disgusted. I didn't recognize any of the characters, the plot was thin and absurd, and the quality of the writing appeared to have taken a nosedive. I think part of it was due to the fact that another author had taken over the series at that point. Another part may have been the series overstaying its welcome. After thirty some books, things can get tired and maybe attempts at revival tend to be overdone. Hmm...can book series "jump the shark" too?

  17. Hiya. Thanks for stopping by my blog - I've become a new follower.

The list ideas people have come up with this week are really making me smile. I did the same thing with The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency; just stopped reading them. I guess they are enjoyable but not must-reads, so they're easy to let slip if there are a bunch of other books you *have* to read.

  18. I have 3 and 5 on my not finished list as well. I hope to, but I just haven't gotten around to finishing. They are ehhh...not page turners. Good for lazy days when you have nothing to read.

  19. I'm with you on this on Outlander. People gush about the series, but it didn't grab hold of me. Possibly because I'm not a big time travel fan. Oh. Duh.
